Apple Releases New iPad Air, Free Software


With the usual fanfare and anticipation, Apple released a slimmer, faster versionof its iPad tablet device on Tuesday along with the promise of free operating and productivity software for its users.

The iPad Air, the fifth iteration of Apple’s tablet line, is about 20 percent thinner than previous versions, according toReuters, and is 0.4 lbs. lighter than the previous version.  According to the Los Angeles Times, the iPad Air is also “twice as fast” due to a more powerful A7 processor.

It also comes with a hefty $499 price tag for its 16GB version. Apple said the iPad Air will ship on November 1st.

Apple also announced that its Mac OS and iWork productivity suite will be offered free to all users.  The iWork suite contains programs similar to Microsoft’s Office suite.

Apple also released a new Macbook Pro notebook and Mac Pro desktop. The Mac Pro will retail for $3,000.

The debut of the one-pound iPad Air and MacBook Pro with sharper ‘retina’ display repeats a pattern of recent launches with improvements in existing lines rather than totally new products, and Apple shares fell 0.3 percent for the day.

Apple said upgrades to its Mac operating system and iWork software suite, which compete with Microsoft Corp’s Excel, Word and other applications, will now be offered for all MacBooks and Mac computers.

That brings Apple’s model of free system software upgrades on phones and tablets to the computer market, where Apple is still the underdog to Microsoft’s Windows.

Apple may be trying to safeguard its grip on mobile software as Microsoft revs up its Windows-powered Surface Pro, which runs applications, such as Word or Excel, that are the standard for business customers, analysts said.

“We are turning the industry on its ear, but this is not why we’re doing it,” Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook told media and technology executives at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center.

“We want our customers to have our latest software.”

The market is awash in inexpensive tablets running Google Inc’s Android software, but the company may be focused on fending off a threat from the high end.

“In the tablet PC market, they do think Microsoft is a bigger threat than Android,” said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi. “The iPad Air will compete with Surface Pro, not some rinky-dink Android tablet.”

Gartner estimates that Apple’s share of the global tablet market will slip to 47.2 percent in 2014, with Android-based tablets just overtaking Apple’s this year. The IT research outfit expects Microsoft tablets to grab 3.4 percent of the market this year, double the 1.7 percent forecast for 2013.


Microsoft gets 65 percent of its Windows revenue, which totalled $19.2 billion (11.8 billion pounds) last fiscal year, from PC manufacturers which put the system on its machines, and 35 percent from other sources, chiefly people and businesses buying its software separately to install themselves.

The latest version of Windows, when bought separately to install on an old computer, starts at $120 for a home version and goes up to $200 for the full ‘Pro’ version. The latest Windows 8.1 upgrade was free for customers running Windows 8.

Apple’s product launches on Tuesday were evolutionary, with the new iPads equipped with faster processors and better screens. Cook, at an industry conference in May, had hinted at “several more game changers” from Apple which could include wearable computers, but had not given a time frame.

“As always with Apple, expectations on systematic breakthrough hardware innovations are irrational,” said Forrester analyst Thomas Husson said. “Apple is good at inventing new products and at maximizing profitability of its product range over time through software innovations and clever marketing.”

Apple’s new iPad Air – its full-size tablet – is about 20 percent thinner than the previous generation of tablets, weighs one pound and starts at $499. It will go on sale on November 1.

The iPad mini now has a “retina” high-resolution screen and starts at $399, compared with $329 for the previous mini model. The two new tablets would face stiff competition, with Microsoft, Nokia and Inc all plugging rival devices in coming months.

Apple also showed off a new Mac Pro, a premium and high-powered cylindrical desktop computer that will be assembled in United States. It had shown the computer at a previously event.

For the first, Apple will launch the new iPads simultaneously in the United States and China, its biggest market, which is also a key growth region.

Apple, which jumpstarted the tablet computing market in 2010 with the first iPad, has already come under increasing pressure from cheaper devices ranging from Amazon’s Kindle Fire to Samsung Electronics Co Ltd’s Note.

But while Apple is ceding market share to rivals, its superior library of apps and content should safeguard its lead for years to come, analysts say.

Longer term however, investors hope to see real device innovation from a company that has not unveiled a new breakthrough product in years.

Google releases firewall-surpassing software

Biomedical researchers often confront large quantities of information that may be amassed in many forms: vital signs, blood cell counts, lengthy DNA sequences, bar graphs, MRIs, patient demographics, and so much more. How do researchers assemble, access and analyze all that data without having to become specialized database technicians themselves?

A team of informatics experts and biomedical researchers at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) offers a new software toolkit to help researchers wrangle data. Their open-source, highly interactive framework called Harvest ( is designed to let users to navigate quickly among different types and levels of data.

“We want to help researchers explore their data, not their database,” said Byron Ruth, lead developer of Harvest at CHOP’s Center for Biomedical Informatics (CBMi). Ruth is one of the co-authors of a paper introducing CBMi’s Harvest framework, appearing online Oct. 16 in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

Co-author Michael J. Italia added, “Research institutions typically work through their information technology staff to provide a single data warehouse that may be too general-purpose for all its projects, or develop one-off solutions on a case-by-case basis for each project.”

“Our approach in Harvest is different,” said Italia, the CBMi’s manager of Applications Research. “We decided to focus on end-users, generalizing the toolkit for application to any biomedical study with multiple collaborators, but also allowing individual software developers and data managers to customize the software for specific projects.”

Harvest, said Italia, “isn’t just shrink-wrapped, ready-to-go software.” He estimates that Harvest typically provides 80 percent of the work, leaving it to any institution’s software developer to adapt the framework to a project’s needs, in collaboration with each project’s principal investigator. Harvest is open-source, so users are free to see bug reports, check software patches, and share fixes and customizations with a wider community of users.

A key feature of Harvest is the ability to maneuver smoothly among various levels of data, from individual patient records to aggregated reports of all patients in a database, and to subpopulations in between. Users can construct queries to slice and dice data—grouping subjects, for instance, by age or ethnicity, calling up individual blood test results or MRIs, or including or excluding specific diagnoses.

One advantage of Harvest is that it provides transparency and visibility to data in a manner that is familiar to a researcher who is invested in a particular disease or project. “Harvest adopts convenient and clear interfaces to view and explore data that are increasingly used in other industries, such as social media,” said senior author and CBMi director Peter S. White, Ph.D. “We have found that this often helps users to quickly familiarize themselves with data they are seeing, which increases the likelihood that they will trust the resource, and even be incentivized to contribute to the project as it develops.”

Politician Invests in Software for Exchanging Contact Information & Networking

Cape Town – The government’s decision to limit information technology (IT) students at school to “outdated” software has been described by the Cape Chamber of Commerce as a sign of slipping education standards.

This follows the news that the Department of Basic Education plans to standardise computer applications technology and IT classes by restricting pupils to Microsoft Office and the Delphi programming language respectively.

IT specialist Derek Keats railed against the decision on his blog, calling the Delphi programming language outdated and unexciting.

Many other IT specialists said the language was rarely used.

On Wednesday, the chamber’s digital portfolio committee met to discuss the department’s decision. With the plans only being implemented at public schools in 2015, it said there was still time for the industry to intervene.

Committee chairman Roderick Lim Banda said standardisation on one technology or programming language was ”much like trying to study medicine based on the kidney as the only part of the human anatomy”.

The chamber and the committee’s participants will lobby for a re-evaluation of the decision.

However despite the criticism, the department said standardising the syllabus would eradicate the complexity of having two separate programming languages, which was costing the government money and making it difficult for students and teachers to move between schools. – Cape Argus

Microsoft answering Windows 8.1 questions on Reddit

In what would cheer up the Valley IT professions, the Information and Communications Technology Association of J&K (ICTA), a guild of IT professionals, will participate in a mega IT show at Mumbai next month. Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) will organise the event.
The office bearers of the council held deliberations in this connection with ICTA members at a meeting here on Saturday.
The council volunteered to guide and support the ICTA to enable it to compete with the global competitors.
Chairman, ICTA, Mehraj Gulzar, giving details of the meeting to Greater Kashmir, said: “It was an exclusive interactive meet between the council and the ICTA. We have decided that our members will take part in various global export promotion activities being conducted by the council.”
He said many of the ICTA members will be launching innovative IT products at the India IT show.
“The show will receive over 365 buyers from across the globe. The event will help give immense business visibility to the state and thus enhance the J&K exports of Software & Services,” Gulzar said.
Pertinently, the buyers to the show are coming from countries like the US, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, Algeria, Botswana, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Cote D Ivoire, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Japan, Mongolia, Qatar, UAE, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, UK, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, etc.
“Our association with ESC is aimed to create an enabling export environment for growth and development of the IT sector in J&K as a whole which in the long run would provide a sustained export growth opportunity,” he added.
Veer Sagar, Regional Chairman (North), ESC said the participation by J&K IT companies would help them project the state on the global IT map.
“ESC is committed to assist the ICT companies from the state in their efforts to diversify globally,” he said.
D K Sareen, Executive Director, ESC said given the improving investment climate in J&K, there “is possibility of investment in its IT sector.”
“With conducive weather, dust-free environment and availability of skilled human resource in the state, the IT investment in J&K can be a win-win situation and lead to sustainable generation of employment.”
He said: “The Central Government should consider imparting special skills for the qualified people to make them employable in the IT units and consider giving special incentives to the industry investing in a big way in Information Technology in Jammu and Kashmir.”
